    I worked on a small part of an adaptive quantum state tomography protocol, testing whether approximating via truncating the Schmidt decomposition would increase the efficiency and accuracy of iterations of measurements moving towards the best one. The aim of quantum tomography is to reconstruct the quantum state at hand by taking measurements of identically prepared states, but obviously this is highly inefficient. An adaptive tomography protocol was recently illustrated that picks the next best measurements using tricks from the foundations of quantum mechanics. My main work was reproducing the codes for this algorithm in Mathematica first, and then in C++. Lastly, as a final test of the method developed, I was shown how to work the experimental set up and what each part of the optical set up does. We found that the decomposition worked just as well for pure states, but for a mixed state actually performed slightly worse. This is still an interesting result in itself.

    In this project we developed a GUI in Matlab, modifying the already-existing GUI that the group works with to do statistical analysis on their fluorescent single molecules. The project aim was to make the current program more visually pleasing and add in the analysis of a new parameter. I also shadowed a PhD student working there who showed me how to prepare samples and conduct the experiments.
