I help leaders work out what's really going on - in their businesses, their teams, their own heads - and chart a course through it. I typically work with mid-sized, privately owned businesses and professional services firms. The sort of situations where I get called in include:When you're hiring and: - it's a critical senior role, you have to get right- you've got it wrong in the pastWhen a leader is: - new in the role and in need of support to step up- not having enough impact or influence When a leader has to:- lead the organisation through a change or a crisis- manage strong personalities- manage under-performance or bad behaviourWhen the leadership team is:- struggling to handle conflict effectively- avoiding a big issue because it's too contentious- running a family business and family dynamics are getting in the wayWhen you're thinking about succession planning and need to:- develop your successor(s)- work out how to secure your legacy- smooth the transitionWhen someone:- can't cope at work- can't manage emotions appropriately at work- lacks confidence or has impostor syndromeIn any of these situations, some psychological insight, a listening ear and gently challenging questions can make all the difference. My clients tell me what they value is my ability to help them get to the heart of the matter and work out a way forward from there: "Caroline has proved a very effective leadership coach, giving me insights into myself that I would not have reached on my own." Bryan Carroll, CEO Bristol Zoo (now retired) "Caroline has provided trusted, candid and robust insights to inform numerous selection decisions. Her professional, insightful and non-threatening approach, elicit a deeper analysis of candidates’ suitability than interviews alone." Andrew Richards, Managing Partner, PKF-Francis Clark.Specialities: Executive coaching, leadership team support, psychological profiling, psychometrics, family business, assessment.

In reality I learnt my trade as an associate of other consultancies, some of whom I still work with. My work has mostly focused on assessment and development, including:- leadership coaching- senior team coaching- in-depth psychological profiling- assessment and development centre design and delivery- management due diligence- career and outplacement coaching- competency based interviewingIn my early years, I worked mostly with middle managers in either large corporates or the public sector. As I progressed I've worked with more senior managers, up to board director level in major PLCs. My work with Cardinal (see below) on Management Due Diligence projects introduced me to the privately-owned and equity-backed business sectors. From quite early on I had a few of my own direct clients but (lacking that entrepreneurial drive) it wasn't until about 2011 that I started to make a concerted effort to build an independent client base. I now work predominantly in the owner-managed business sector, which I really love because I feel like I can make more of a difference. Most of my clients are relatively large organisations for that sector (100 - 2000 employees) but I have a few much smaller clients, who are just as much of a joy to work with. I have a particular interest in family business.I am often referred by business advisers, such as lawyers, accountants, non-execs and turnaround specialists. If that's you and you think I could help one of your clients, feel free to get in touch.I write a blog about psychology at work, which covers everything from delegation to managing anxiety to the psychology of Brexit. What I love about working at Holmes Noble is that my recruitment colleagues are never defensive about 'their' candidates and are always open to finding out what my team and I can discover about people. Our work complements theirs to provide a very rounded picture for the client. As a matter of ethical principle, we always offer feedback to candidates, having put themselves through that level of scrutiny. As most of my other work is in mid-sized businesses, it's nice to get involved in the corporate world too. Show less -
Committee MemberInstitute For Turnaround Jan 2019 - PresentWales And The West RegionWhat's a business psychologist doing in an organisation that tries to rescue failing businesses? Infiltrating! I believe business psychologists have as much to contribute to the turnaround of a business as accountants or lawyers. There has almost always been a leadership failure and leadership is our focus.
