About Caroline Hochheuser

Currently working on a PhD project in a collaboration between the Prinses Maxima Center Utrecht and Sanquin Bloodbank Amsterdam in which we study the bone marrow metastatic niche of neuroblastoma, a pediatric cancer. We want to find out how the metastatic tumor cells differ from those of the primary tumor and how they interact with mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in the bone marrow. The latter have been described to promote tumor progression by eliciting drug resistance and boosting tumor cells' proliferation. By establishing a crosstalk network between neuroblastoma cells and MSCs we aim to ultimately find new targets for therapy and improve the survival of patients with neuroblastoma. I have previously worked on a project (Hubrecht Institute, Utrecht, NL) focusing on the establishment and improvement of genome editing techniques in human iPS and ES cells using CRISPR/Cas9 and the ‘Sleeping Beauty’ transposon systemand on another project (University of Edinburgh, UK) concerning the interaction of innate immune cells with pre-neoplastic cells in the brain in the zebrafish modelI explored the world of education in a project related to the 'Travelling DNA-labs' under the supervision of Cathelijne Reincke, UMC Utrecht. This practical brings an exciting lesson about cancer including hands-on experience with laboratory techniques to high schools in the Netherlands.
