About Caroline R. Mays
I am the Executive Director at New Story Leadership, where we are building a community of leaders from Palestine and Israel through the power of storytelling. With over 15 years of experience in the Middle East and the U.S. federal government, I bring a background in strategic communications, stakeholder engagement, and government affairs to NSL's important work in modern-era peacebuilding. Before NSL, I launched the first external relations strategy for Ma’an Network, the largest independent media organization in the Palestinian territories. In that role, I secured support and buy-in from ambassadors, public officials, media executives, and large international organizations like Save the Children, the U.S. State Department, and UNESCO. Prior to my time in the Middle East, I worked at the Palestinian Mission to the United States and in the U.S. House of Representatives, staffing over 30 oversight, legislative, and investigative hearings for the Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties, chaired by Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-NY). I am a student of conflict resolution and believe in the power of personal connection. It was a career highlight of mine to join Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai’s official delegation at the 2014 celebration in Oslo, Norway, where I had the opportunity to speak to former Pakistani President Yousaf Raza Gilani about the role of women in peacemaking. I am trained in facilitation, coaching, and nonviolent communication and volunteer for organizations like DOROT, working with aging adults to help combat social isolation and build intergenerational relationships.I hold a master’s degree in Middle East and Islamic Studies from The American University of Paris and earned my bachelor’s degree in Political Science from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
