In my first full-time position after college, I worked as a Medical Technologist Trainee before being promoted to Medical Technologist II via the Quest Diagnostics Trainee Program. As a technologist in the Forensic Toxicology Dept., I tested patient samples for drug abuse via instrumental analysis. Techniques used daily included: LC-MS extraction, LC-MS injection, ELISA screening, sample preparation, and careful completion of laboratory paperwork, including Chain of Custody forms. As a Medical Technologist, I carefully prepared reports of sample test findings and released them to clients.

As an undergraduate researcher at NIMML I worked as part of an experimental team developing a drug to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). I learned how to operate laboratory instruments like flow cytometers and cell counters, produce sterile media, and handle live animals. More importantly, I gained experience in teamwork, laboratory management and safety compliance, and paying close attention to detail.

In this lab, I worked closely with the laboratory technician, who was working on eight concurrent projects. I cultured bacteria in a sterile environment, prepared dilution series, and used UV spectrophotometry and LC-MS to quantify protein samples. I used Microsoft Excel extensively to perform calculations, predictions, and reports and graphical displays based on experimental data.

During my junior year, I acted as a Peer Mentor for incoming freshman majoring in biochemistry and a Teaching Assistant in the Introduction to Biochemistry course. I helped students adjust to college life and tutored them on course material. I also led student discussions on current scientific research and possible career paths, and graded homework assignments.
