Elkinton Invasive Forest Insects Lab

For this position, I conducted and assisted with both in-lab and field research. This includes invasive species monitoring, specimen collection, biological control deployment in the field, and taxonomic identification, DNA extraction, PCR and electrophoresis, and maintaining live specimens, among other skills as-needed in the lab.

I am helping to build an insect and mite management guide for UMass Amherst Extension. This requires me to find EPA approved pesticide active ingredients and search labels for specific restrictions and uses, such as to what pests and sites each individual active ingredient may be applied.

I was an intern for the CAFE Summer Scholars Program at UMass Amherst. For this position, I conducted early detection monitoring for the invasive spotted lanternfly, which required weekly maintenance of traps throughout the Pioneer Valley and identification and preservation of trap bycatch. Additionally, I summarized results in the form of a poster.
