About Caroline Sorge

Caroline is an architectural and international development professional with a decade of experience in sustainable design, community engagement, and international development. She enables teams to develop design thinking and strategies around sustainability, healthy buildings, building performance, embodied carbon, and resilience. She also advises teams on the integration of community engagement and equity as part of the design process. Recently, Caroline completed a Master of Science in International Cooperation for Sustainable Emergency Architecture at UIC Barcelona where she engaged with several international partners and organizations serving urgent humanitarian needs across the globe. Now, she works as an East Regional Sustainability Specialist for SmithGroup. In addition, she serves as Vice-Chair of the United Nations Association National Capital Area’s Sustainable Development Committee, and Co-chair of the AIA DC Resiliency and Disaster Response Committee. Recently, she collaborated with the Urban Climate Change Research Network to advise cities around just transitions to climate change adaptation. In addition, she assisted international NGOs, like CARE International, with guidance for resilient, dignified, emergency shelters in Northwest Syria by preparing drawings and technical information to be used in the public Shelter Cluster guidance.Over the last decade, Caroline placed in several international architecture competitions, created neonatal ward renovation plans for 22 hospitals in Malawi on a USAID grant through the Rice Global Health Institute, shared findings from climate justice research in Cape Town at the Northern European Emergency and Disaster Studies (NEEDS) Conference, and accepted numerous awards, including the Presidential Call to Service Award, presented by Barack Obama, for her completion of over 4,000 hours of community service. Her experience with research, design, and service spans Malawi, India, Jordan, Spain, Brazil, South Africa, Dominican Republic, Italy, China, Thailand, Uganda, Syria, Philippines, and the US.     Caroline collaborated with an international team, including members of the Resilient Cities Network and local governments, to conduct research on climate change and urban design in global cities seeking carbon neutrality and climate justice. Moreover, Caroline researched locally-led adaptation initiatives, especially nature-based and ecosystem-based adaptation strategies. In this project, urban design and planning methodologies coupled with quantitative climate impact assessment models and soft tools including stakeholder and community engagement. For example, the team completed storm risk data analysis, including GIS visualization of flood risk and stormwater impacts. Then, the team offered ideas for implementable adaptation strategies for a region of Rio de Janeiro identified by city officials as in need of slum-upgrading and climate adaptation measures to relieve human suffering caused by climate change.

The center included: a living library, a technological skills lab, an educational center and a preventative health clinic. In addition, Caroline took on a few more projects by designing a network of solar-powered mobile clinics and proposing the idea to the Mayor of Cape Town.
