    Was hired in Nov 2009 was to be the environmental specialist for all Flight Standards, FAA actions in the western half of US. Prior to Nov 2009, I had absolutely no experience in aviation or as a federal environmental specialist. Within 3 months, I had not only mastered the role, but started contributing to such a level that superiors in other regions were providing kudos.•FAA Head Quarters (HQ) point of contact for the data analysis support of Flight Standards environmental policy development. This data analysis included statistical methods theory/principles.•Was identified as presenting the solution to a problem which then took an overarching FAA HQ division 1.5 years to independently put forward. The solution would result in cost savings of approximately $150,000.•Solely undertook the statistical data analysis investigating the reliability of a nextgen hybrid landing system. The data analysis took 1.5 weeks as opposed to what normally takes months. Was told by experts, that the analysis was some of the best data analysis seen. The hybrid landing system effort went on to receive an FAA administrator award. •Put forward a new procedure of undertaking noise analysis that reduced work load from hours to minutes.•Consistently received kudos from a variety of stakeholders for dedication, being great to work with and getting the job done through initiative, innovation, great ideas and persistence. •Through successful self instigated data collection and analysis efforts, clarified current Flight Standards, FAA environmental compliance, as well as illustrating the misalignment between current regulations and environmental impact of the actions. •Establishing national environmental procedures for Flight Standards, FAA. This was jointly achieved through industry and regional and HQ FAA training sessions. •Program manager for all environmental actions, within Flight Standards, FAA occurring in the 17 U.S States, west of the Mississippi River.
