About Caroline Puel

Award-winning journalist and author, witness to the transformations of China for the last forty years, Caroline Puel has been the Asia correspondent for the daily Liberation (1992-2000) and the weekly Le Point (1994- 2014). After 18 months in France as DGA (Vice General Director) at Lille City Hall in charge of Economics and International Affairs, she went back to China between 2017 and 2024 teaching Economics, Political Sciences, Sociology and Geopolitics (she has been laureate of the 2021 contest organized by the French Ministry of Education, CAPES of Social and Economic Sciences) and is spending a scholar year in Bordeaux, France, to deepen her specialty in economics. Caroline is also part of the Foreign Trade Advisors, appointed by the French Prime Minister, vice president of the national education commission.A graduate from the Political Institute in Paris (Sciences Po) in 1985, and the French Institute for Oriental Languages in Chinese studies (1986), she spent a year at the Chinese Foreign Affairs University in Beijing (1986-87).Caroline started her career in diplomacy as an intern at the French Embassy in Beijing in 1984 and later worked in their press department (1987-88), before turning to journalism in 1989.Motivated by a keen interest to discover people and countries, she became "grand reporter”, then "diplomatic correspondent" and finally “war correspondent” in the Middle East, Yugoslavia and Asia. She travelled extensively across Greater China from her base in Hong Kong (1992-1998), returning to Beijing in 1994 where she founded the China office of the French daily Liberation, then the weekly Le Point. She has been their “China correspondent” and produced their special issues on China till 2016. In 2013 she founded a quarterly lifestyle magazine in Chinese in cooperation between Le Point and the Chinese reformist economic weekly Caijing. Also an art critic and radio chronicler, Caroline has taught at Sciences Po Paris (2004-2010) and then at Sciences Po Bordeaux where she founded the chair on Contemporary China Studies in September 2014Caroline is the author or contributor of nearly 30 books and art catalogues. Her last book « Les trente glorieuses chinoises » (Perrin Tempus 2013), describing the transformation of China since the opening in 1980, is now a reference in French colleges and universities. Caroline received the Albert Londres Prize (eq. French Pulitzer) for her coverage of China, she has also been appointed Knight in Legion d’honneur order and received the Academic Palms for her involvement in educational programs.
