About Caroline Vanharmelen

Caroline is driven by a desire to make a difference in the world. She moved to Seattle after graduating Magna Cum Laude from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance. Drawn by a city full of forward-thinking design, cutting-edge sustainability, and an active community of passionate individuals and organizations, she began her career working on affordable housing and senior housing - seeking out work that was for the greater good. Caroline currently serves as King County Metro’s Green Building Program Manager, supporting capital project teams to maximize strategic sustainability goals. As an Architect, LEED AP BD+C, CSBA, ENV SP and LFA, Caroline brings passion and years of experience supporting project teams achieve sustainability goals. Caroline finds great meaning in her work here at Metro - supporting sustainability in the public transportation sector, where impact comes from lowering carbon through infrastructure and building design, and through Metro’s role providing reliable transportation, taking cars off the road and lowering GHG emissions in our region. Caroline was an ArtsFund Associate from 2008-2013 and completed their Board Leadership Training program in 2010. She has served on the Board of Directors for Town Hall Seattle since 2011, and as Chair of the Building Committee from 2011-2019, where she was an integral part of a $35 million capital campaign and sustainable renovation of their historic building. Caroline served as President Elect, Board President and Past President from 2019-2023 and is now back to participating on the Building Committee. Caroline has played the flute since 6th grade and performed with the Seattle Rock Orchestra from 2009-2019. She was previously a member of the Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra (2005-2013), a founding member of the Elliott Bay Wind Quintet (2004-2007) and performed with the New River Valley Symphony Orchestra while at Virginia Tech (2000-2004).
