I have specialised in public rights of way law since 1991. It is a complex and sometimes archaic area of law which continually poses demanding questions - and causes a great deal of frustration for landowners especially. A great deal of passion is aroused by the existence of public rights of way over private land and the incompatibility of current land use with the existence of such rights can be a source of contention - and significant expense - for landowners, farmers, developers and private residents.I especially enjoy the challenge of achieving changes to the network of footpaths, bridleways and byways. Over the years I have established effective working relationships with many local authorities and user groups and find that achieving unopposed public path orders for diversions - and sometimes extinguishments - is quite possible.I'm a Fellow the Institute of Public Rights of Way and Access Management and have served on their board of Directors. I've also been a member of a Defra 'Expert Group' looking at the implementation of new legislation to introduce a right to apply for a public path order.
