Research | Public Engagement | Visual Art & Socially Engaged Art Currently undertaking a practice-based PhD investigating the potential benefits of using visual & socially-engaged art in the development and delivery of heritage interpretation. Utilising debris salvaged from ‘the Mack’ after the 2014 fire, this project uses photogrammetry, 3D printing and traditional moulding and casting processes to fabricate creative replicas that might act as surrogates, or provocations during in a programme of live events. Public engagement is a key element of this methodology, firstly to reflexively guide the direction of the research and practice, and secondly to act as ‘a proof of concept’, designing an immersive experience that asks participants to reconsider our relationships with materials, material culture and notions of authenticity. At its core, this research gives evidence to the power of material encounters as a catalyst for social interaction that may deepen engagement with lost or vulnerable heritage.
