I am from a father who escaped the crushing poverty of Appalachia by joining the Navy at 16, and sailed the oceans in big ships that smelled of oil, exercising our dominion in the air, land, and sea. I am from a widowed mother who dealt with her loss through service to the community and a sense of humor. I am a survivor of domestic violence.
