Profile bio

About Carolynn Harris

I am a PhD candidate at Dartmouth College in the Earth Sciences department. I am excited about the future of astrobiology, polar science, and stable isotope proxies. My dissertation research strives to develop stable hydrogen isotope analysis of archaeal lipid biomarkers as a novel proxy which could improve our understanding of past hydroclimate conditions. I'm also interested in applying stable isotope probing as technique to detect active life beyond Earth.I am passionate about exploration, field safety, and science communication. I hope to collaborate with people of many backgrounds, ensuring that expedition-based science is conducted responsibly with a culture that is safe and welcoming for all. I am an avid endurance hiker and explorer -- I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, traveled to the Arctic and Antarctica many times to conduct research, and completed a 45-day simulated mission to Mars with NASA HERA.

Carolynn Harris work experience

A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.

Nsf Jsep Graduate Fellow

As a JSEP Fellow, I received training in cross-cultural science communication in the Arctic, developed an accessible teaching module focusing on cold-loving microbes in Greenland as an analog for astrobiology on Mars, and spent 3 weeks teaching a diverse cohort of high school and undergraduate students in Greenland. Through this experience, I increased my capacity for designing and implementing broader impacts related to my research and developed an interdisciplinary view of polar regions and their importance to global environmental change.

Difuse Data Science Fellow

As a Data Science Engineer with the DIFUSE program, I worked with a team of professors and undergraduate interns to develop data science modules that integrate into existing course curriculum for introductory astronomy courses. Our module includes a series of exercises that use the principles of data science to teach about Newtonian motion. All exercises are completed in Google CoLab using Python.
