Understanding the common mistakes that people make when finding their way in the bush and a passion for connecting with an individual's learning style, I developed a two-day INTRODUCTION TO NAVIGATION course, to meet the needs of bushwalkers, hikers, climbers, canyoners and volunteers. Building on the foundational skills of reading and interpreting topographic maps and the theory of compass use, we spend the 2nd day in the bush, reading 'map to ground', using a compass and moving through natural landscapes. Using everyday language and removing the mystery of 'navigation alchemy', I teach from the mindset of deep observation of the world around us and a calm, mindful approach of walking 'with' the land, not against it. This course leads onto level 2 (2 day car camping), level 3 (2 day overnight hike) and level 4 (3 day expedition).

Working alongside Police Rescue Search Co-ordinators, an SES Search Commander is responsible for strategy, logistics, communications and personnel for land search and rescue in NSW. In her role as Deputy Unit Commander, Caro is responsible for the Blue Mountains SES Bush Search and Rescue Group, which covers the areas from the Nepean River to the NSW/SA border.

Aiming to encourage people to get out and enjoy the multi-day hike, the Six Foot Track between Katoomba and Jenolan Caves, whilst working towards best practice in the communication of such experiences, this project team produced a guidebook, website, interactive maps and videos.
