About Carrie Barnes

I work at the intersection of communications, strategy, and policy. I’m passionate about stories that lift communities up—especially women and families—and the public policies that strive to achieve this. After a stint helping the Hillary for America campaign, I pursued a master’s at the Goldman School of Public Policy at Berkeley. My graduate work focused on national labor policies such as paid family leave and equal pay, as well as specific California concerns that included closing the achievement gap and increasing workplace safety especially for women. My master’s capstone proposed several legislative avenues to help regulate the restaurant industry in California and was nominated for the Goldman School's Bardach Prize for Outstanding Capstone — laying the groundwork for federal “junk fees” legislation & state service charges SB478 (CA).Prior to this, I’ve spent more than a decade running a strategic marketing communications firm with a focus on mission-driven organizations. It’s been my honor to partner with clients such as The Aspen Institute and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to create a voice for social entrepreneurs. After working with a global community dedicated to social change, I am now committed to creating change in my own community and working towards a more just, equitable and inclusive Bay Area.
