The pandemic taught me that long-term care in the United States is a broken system. After spending 128 days being unable to see my adult son, who lives in an Intermediate Care Facility for adults with complex medical issues and developmental disabilities, I knew I needed to do something to try and help fix this system. The lockdown of the residents was in place to try and prevent them from getting covid, causing as much if not more damage than covid itself. Isolation kills and I wasn't willing to allow my son to die failure to thrive, depression, and social isolation. I knew my son was well cared for in a good facility, but they were unable to provide the one on one daily care I provide my son. Advocacy has always been part of my life thanks to my son. Over the past three years, I have had the opportunity to advocate at both state and federal levels for my son and other residents in long-term care, while learning everything I could about the rules and regulations in long-term care. My favorite quote is "We were not put on this earth to take, we were put here to give back". Throughout my life, I have volunteered for various organizations and causes. Supporting the needs of all residents in long-term care has now become my life's mission. Kids have always been at the top of my list when it came to my volunteering, I spent ten years cooking at a summer camp for kids with epilepsy, overseeing the Children's Miracle Network fundraising for the Sam's Club I worked at for five years, and I have been the fundraising coordinator for FireTruck O Toy's since 2014.
