Are you listening to your users? I do.That's what I do for a living. As a UX consultant for voice user interfaces (or, "VUI"​), I help companies create compelling, brand-appropriate, USABLE interactions suited to the unique needs of their customers - and their target customers. There's a mix of art and science to what I do, and few overarching truisms; the ultimate goal is to create an interaction that is "right"​ for a specific audience. In my role, I take a long look at the people who are calling and really get to know them: their preferences, demographics, brand perception, lexicon, hopes, dreams… I examine the channels they use and identify how, when and why they use them. I take everything I've learned about these users and marry that understanding with the specific organizational requirements to create a conceptual interface. And then we test it for usability. Iteratively. Exhaustively. With real, live people. Proven user-centered design methodology provides unique insight into the real motivations - and motivators - of the people interacting with an organization. I use all of these inputs to inform practical, detailed recommendations for user experiences that will both meet the needs and expectations of users while aligning to tradition organizational drivers.In this age of Big Data fueling every multi-omni-cross-channel roadmap, it's critical to remember this: every single interaction a person has with your company colors their perception of who you are and what you stand for. Missteps can undermine the most diligent of brand strategies, but, worse, you risk losing customers. But, the end results of doing it right? Reduced overhead, increased loyalty and customer satisfaction.So, do you listen to your users? You really ought to.
