I am a journalism entrepreneur.In 1990, I started PerformInk newspaper at the back of a theatre bookstore. Six months later, I bought the paper. It ran for 21 years. Because it was being run by me, it was more than just an “industry rag.” We covered race and sexism and arts policy and business and economics. We talked about the role of the artist in society. It is both my strength and my most annoying quality that I’m always looking at the bigger picture. Also, with PerformInk I realized that managing people is an art. It’s about listening. And helping people succeed. I’ve gotten pretty good at it.In 2007, on a whim, I entered the Public Radio Talent Quest. I had been a performer and a journalist, and I loved public radio. I ended up in the top 10.On March 15, 2020 I emailed the GM of KUNV in Las Vegas. “Hey, are we doing anything on the Coronavirus?” The next day, we were discussing how long the show should be, and when it should air. Two days later we aired our first show, which I produced and hosted.This is indicative of my professionalism and flexibility. I can put something together with the quality of a national show in two days.In addition, I write a column for the Nevada Current, focusing on the dysfunction in the Clark County School District. And I write a SubStack - You're Overthinking It - to talk about the deeper issues behind our social and journalistic exchanges.I’m quite open about my view that good journalism must encompass different lenses, and that “objectivity” and “truth” are not always the same thing. We should look at all sides and hear many different points of view on issues, but we cannot center ourselves between someone’s humanity and someone who wants to take that humanity away. As a queer woman I have seen the damage that kind of biased, false balance can do.I also believe that it’s our job as journalists to complicate the narrative. That doesn’t mean that you put out a complicated final product. Our job is to take harder concepts - to start in the middle of the story - and translate them so they are easy to understand.This is something I have done my entire career.And while I’m incredibly comfortable talking to people in the community, I am known in Nevada – and especially among our Congressional delegation and our Attorney General – for asking tough questions and getting people off their talking points. I’m also known for having fun and making my people feel at ease.Listening is key.
