    I was in a professional development fellowship to explore the role of science and scientists in the U.S. federal government through "science for policy" and "policy for science". In addition to the responsibilities to my office (see other concurrent entries), I co-founded the Fellows Affinity Group for Crowdsourcing and Citizen Science which organizes open-to-the-public events to explore different types of citizen science projects. In 2017, the Affinity Group helped coordinate the Washington, DC area's participation in the City Nature Challenge by connecting regional stakeholders and organizing in-person events to explore biodiversity and learn how to record and share data using iNaturalist.org.

    Belmont Forum is a consortium of funders committed to advancing transdisciplinary science to provide knowledge for understanding, mitigating and adapting to global environmental change. Belmont Forum members and partner organizations work collaboratively by issuing international calls for proposals, committing to best practices for open data access, and providing transdisciplinary training.I supported the Belmont Forum's e-Infrastructures and Data Management initiative with the goal of making data from Belmont Forum projects more findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR). I worked with an international team of colleagues to implement the Belmont Forum's Open Data Policy and Principles by integrating data management planning into grant making process. Due to the inherently international nature of Belmont Forum collaborations, data policies of many different funders from many different countries (and supranational entities such as the European Commission) must be taken into account in Belmont Forum processes. We leveraged the products and working groups of related organizations such as the Research Data Alliance, International Council for Science Committee on Data for Science and Technology (ICSU CODATA), World Data Systems (ICSU WDS), Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and many others for guidance and collaboration.

    I used my background in ecological research to encourage people to have authentic, deep engagement with nature by sharing their observations and photographs of biodiversity online. While working with web developers, I was extremely proactive and hands-on when developing new functionality or troubleshooting problems to ensure the best possible outcome with the available resources.I collaborated closely with iNaturalist and the National Park Service (at the park, regional, and national levels) as part of National Geographic's 10-year partnership on BioBlitzes in National Parks. I coordinated biodiversity experts to lead inventories at the National Parks BioBlitz - Washington, D.C. in May 2016. A BioBlitz is an in-the-field event to record as many species of plants, animals, and fungi as possible in a defined space and time.I also managed the Great Nature Project, which was a National Geographic initiative from 2013-2015 to encourage people to explore biodiversity anywhere in the world by sharing photos along with data that can be used to answer scientific questions. Accomplishments and Responsibilities:-Coordinated recruitment, training, and communications for over 300 volunteer experts for the National Park Service Centennial BioBlitzes.-Oversaw front- and back-end website integration in a product owner role of greatnatureproject.org with iNaturalist.org via their API (the Great Nature Project portal was retired in early 2016).-Developed a vision, mission statement, and 3-year strategic plan for the Great Nature Project (unfortunately, it was not implemented).-Crafted promotional materials, emails, social media messages, and blog posts. -Launched biodiversity scavenger hunts to encourage family engagement in biodiversity exploration.-Negotiated contracts.-Managed budgets, interns, employees, and contractors.
