André Carrilho is a designer, illustrator, cartoonist, animator and caricature artist, from Lisbon, Portugal.
He has won more than 100 national and international honors and awards and has shown his work in group and solo exhibitions in Portugal, Spain, Brazil, France, China, Czech Republic and USA.
In 2002 he was awarded the Gold Award for illustrator's portfolio by the Society for News Design (USA), one of the most prestigious illustration awards in the world.
His work has been published by the New York Times, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine, The New Statesman, The New Republic, Independent on Sunday, NZZ am Sonntag, Harper's Magazine and Diário de Notícias, among other publications.
In 2004 he teamed up with programmer/dj/musician Nuno Correia to develop interactive/generative visuals under the name Video Jack. He has also directed the short animated movie "Dinner in Lisbon", with script and music by JP Simões.
In 2008 he created with João Paulo Cotrim a project of animated editorial cartoons called Spam Cartoon, with the collaboration of illustrators Cristina Sampaio and João Fazenda, currently broadcasting weekly on RTP tv (Portugal).In 2015 one of his cartoons on the ebola epidemic became viral worldwide, winning the Grand Prize at the World Press Cartoon. That same year he was invited to create a caricature mural to decorate the famous annual Vanity Fair’s Oscar Party.
His first picture book "A Menina com os Olhos Ocupados" (The Girl with the Occupied Eyes), published by Bertrand Editora in 2020, won a Gold Medal at the Society of Illustrators Annual competition (USA) in 2020, the Grand Prize at the Hiii Illustration competition (China) in 2021, and the National Illustration Award (Portugal) in 2020.
