Working as a forensic psychiatrist, in a wide range of roles for over 25 years, I have seen tragic outcomes that can occur when people in need do not receive good enough support for their mental health. My experiences have shown me that supporting recovery and effective management of risk are two sides of the same coin. Too often however, training for front-line staff involved in this work is inadequate. My colleague Brett Bridges and I established Our Curious Minds – a mental health training and consultancy company, to address these concerns. Focused on recovery-oriented risk management, decision-making, complexity and trauma, we are committed to building the capability, confidence and capacity of front line mental health staff and their managers. In my other roles, my work at the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist involves oversight of forensic mental health services, with a particular focus on those based in our prisons. My medicolegal assessment work includes report writing in both civil and criminal jurisdictions (see thepsychiatryexpert.com).
