Assists the Division Commander in commanding a Mechanized Infantry Division assigned to FORSCOM. Supervises the day-to-day training and readiness of over 22,000 Soldiers including three Heavy Brigade Combat Teams, an Infantry Brigade Combat Team, a Combat Aviation Brigade, a Sustainment Brigade and a modular Division Headquarters prepared to deploy as a C/JTFHQ. Responsible for combat readiness and optimum use of resources to sustain readiness at two installations: Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. Assumes the duties and responsibilities of the Division Commander in his absence.

JTF 81 provides command and control to National Guard and Active Duty forces in Indiana when required to assist civil authorities in response to natural disasters or attacks against the US.
