If you Google “What percentage of small business fail” and “Why do small businesses fail” the number of immediate results is enormous and the results vary by article. However, the percentage that fail and why they fail are both mind-numbing and, frankly, disappointing when help to overcome these failure issues is available.In most small businesses, the focus of the owner is usually on product sales or service revenues. It’s challenging to operate a business and keep on top of cash flows, financial results, business volumes, supplier, customer and/or staff issues, industry changes and changes necessary within the business on a timely and responsive basis.I grew up on a farm and still live in a rural community where every business is either farming or a small business. I cut my career teeth in a national accounting firm with offices in small towns providing tax planning & preparation, preparing books & financial statements, and providing management advisory services to small & medium sized businesses…and I loved it!After leaving the accounting firm, management experience in 7 different industries provided me with a broad spectrum of experience, both good and bad. I learned something from each and every one. Each position also provided me an opportunity to apply my training and problem-solving capabilities as every role involved change within the business: - growth or downsizing, - financial reporting, forecasts & budgets, and cash flow management, - systems controls, restructuring, and process & policies development - customer and human relations, - operations, property, inventory or asset managementMy passion for working with small business and helping them succeed has not diminished from what I felt at the beginning of my career…it has grown, as has my knowledge and skill-set.
