As a lab technician I assisted all pre-doctoral and post-doctoral members of the Prescott lab in t¬¬¬heir various lab projects exploring how visceral cues are transduced, encoded and addressed at internal sensory organs like the airways. I developed skills in common laboratory techniques including cryosectioning, immunostaining, cell culture, fluorescence activated cell sorting, and nodose injections. I also undertook my own independent lab project developing an air-liquid-interface cell culture model of the mouse airway epithelium in order to further explore and understand its micro-anatomy, physiology, interaction with pathogens, and roles in innate immunity responses.

As a student researcher in an Environmental Cardiology and Vascular Biology Laboratory, I assisted in the management of mouse colonies, performed cell culture, and developed skills in various molecular biology experiments including PCR and qPCR genotyping, calorimetric analysis via spectrophotometry, BALF extraction, retroorbital bleeding, and tissue dissection. Twice, I was awarded a one-year, $20,000 student supplemental award to foster tobacco-related disease research. My research project involved the study of heart rate variability via electrocardiograms in C57BL/6, Nrf2 knockout, and APOE knockout mice before, during, and after electronic cigarette exposure. Electrocardiogram frequency and time domain parameters such as LF, HF, NN Interval, SDNN, and RMSSD were recorded to determine changes in heart rate variability and autonomic nervous system control for both acute and chronic electronic cigarette exposures.
