As a student engineer, I took responsibility to analyze and assist in the management of a SIEM environment, along with other responsibilites relating to cyber security. In Splunk, I developed requirements for and then created dashboards for consolidating information based on logs from a variety of different sources. In addition, I created alerts used to notify myself and the team of activity that was deemed to be noteworthy.Other technical responsibilites outside of the SIEM environment included working with firewalls and PII finder applications for the purpose of compliance. The work with firewalls included monitoring logs that were not ingested into the SIEM environment for potential malicious activity, auditing the rules on several firewalls to ensure they were up to date, and updating software as needed on several models. In addition I performed threat hunting tasks on a weekly basis, analyzing activity from firewall logs to identify and investigate potentially malicious behavior.Along with technical responsibilities, I worked to create documentation that could be distributed to other members of the organization that could be used to clarify policy and assist in the use of multifactor authentication software. Aside from documentation, when a potential threat was revealed I worked to communicate with the affected party to determine the validity of the activity and if necessary to begin taking steps towards remediation.
