About Carson Farmer
I am passionate about using elements from natural systems to improve electro-mechanical systems. I am a researcher with Dr. Medina's Soft Robotics Group at Liberty University. To date, I co-authored two journal articles with Dr. Medina pertaining to modeling and control methods for dielectric elastomer actuators. As a student, I have worked on the design of four autonomous robots both for my required courses and for competition. Also, I have helped to advance the soft robotics group by performing research supported by CRS at Liberty University pertaining to the design of biomimetic systems. Likewise, I am doing research supported by the Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS) on stabilization of free-space optical communication systems (FSOCs). I am interested in any opportunity to advance engineering and science through research and application.

Research Assistant
I implemented a data acquisition (DAQ) system for a novel hydroelectric energy storage system for a lab-scale test system. I developed a LabView interface for collecting and controlling the lab-scale system.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
I created new sheet metal and injection modeled plastic enclosures in SolidWorks. Also, I conducted tests of products waterproofing and vibration resistance. I worked with other interns to develop cost-efficient vibration reduction methods for speakers attached to sheet metal enclosures.

I worked to develop a free-space optical communication system for a rural area in the southwestern United States. The internship required working remotely with a diverse team to develop a solution. During the internship, I was mentored by a senior EO/IR systems engineer to learn the fundamental of electro-optic and systems engineering. During the project, I was required to communicate with community leaders in a target location to obtain permission. Throughout the project, I communicated with a vendor to potentially supply laser transmitter and receiver systems.The project concluded with the writing of a preliminary draft of a Small-Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant. The internship required weekly progress reporting to display continual progress to achieving a project with the necessary funding
