I served as a graduate teaching assistant for a Wildlife Surveys, selected due to my well-developed personal interest and knowledge of wildlife of the Southeast. As a seasonal intern, my primary task was to help coordinate and run the Stream Watch program, a partnership between KWF and Chugach National Forest to improve the health of the Kenai River and involve the community in conservation. This included volunteer coordination and outreach, both in the office and the field, with volunteer groups such as pipeline workers, the elderly, special needs adults, and Native Alaskan youth groups. Work included river and beach clean-ups, public education, and regular patrols alongside Forest Service employees.I was also able to be involved with a variety of KWF's other conservation and education projects, including assisting with children's summer camp, serving as photographer for a fundraising festival, helping organize a series of 5K races, removing invasive species by hand and with backpack sprayers, and collecting water samples.

I spent a significant amount of time in the lab designing and engineering an experimental setup for a plant physiology experiment. I was also expected to contribute in lab meetings and complete weekly readings from scientific journals.

I served as a research assistant under a PhD student whose work involved a whole-lake nutrient enrichment experiment, in order to find potential early warning signs for algal blooms. This included daily field work on small boats in remote areas, taking water samples and collecting plankton in addition to recording readings from a variety of environmental sensors. Lab work including processing and filtering water samples, and recording more data. Significant time was also spent on peripheral tasks around the research station, such as conducting an independent study on iron content and water color, attending scientific seminars at the research station, learning R, collecting sediment samples, and conducting my own explorations on nesting birds and dragonfly diversity at the station.
