Staff Mechanical Engineer
CurrentI recently had the opportunity to manage the startup of a +$7 million HVAC airside system for a food production plant, designed and built by Burns and McDonnell. This included being on-site for 6 months in a site engineer role assisting the site construction team and contractors as they completed HVAC controls wiring, programming, and SCADA integration. This role gave me the opportunity to branch out of strictly a mechanical role and dive deep into the electrical and controls side of HVAC, and allowed me to further develop my electrical troubleshooting skills, learn to use the operator sides of Metasys (JCI) and Ignition, as well as develop a good understanding of how to use Evapco CPA HMIs. During the startup phase, I interacted heavily with the other team members, client stakeholders and operators due to the HVAC system being connected to the electrical system, natural gas system, the heating hot water system, two glycol systems (15F and 30F, using ammonia to glycol heat exchangers) and one unit with direct fed ammonia. Prior system turnover to the owner, I also acted as the de facto operator for the HVAC system, monitoring the system via the control front ends and addressing issues when needed. I am extremely grateful to the team members who had the confidence in me to allow me the opportunity to take on this role. It was truly a once in a career opportunity!BMcD works with the client to provide a one-stop-shop approach to EPC/Design-Build projects. I have been involved in HVAC design for many projects including industrial and food production facilities, and in that role I also support our refrigeration design team.
