About Jenn Carter

My main research interests lie in exoplanet science. Currently, I use Bayesian Data Analysis techniques to characterize exoplanets. In particular, I am working on improving the reflected and thermal light models used in EXONEST, a Bayesian inference engine used to perform model testing and characterization of exoplanets. The changes will more accurately represent the nature of the incident stellar light by taking into account the finite angular size of the host star. For extremely close-in exoplanets the angular size of the the host star results in the creation of two penumbral zones, distinguished by the amount of the host star illuminating the zone, in addition to the well known fully illuminated and un-illuminated zones (day and night side). Any point within the penumbral zones of the exoplanet is not illuminated by the entirety of the apparent disk of the host star, i.e. it is in twilight. The first penumbral zone is closer to the host star and is illuminated by half or more of the apparent stellar disk, whereas the second penumbral zone is illuminated by less than half of the host star. The second penumbral zone can extend significantly beyond the poles of the exoplanet into the hemisphere of the exoplanet facing away from the host star, resulting in reflected light being present during the primary transit of an exoplanet, a phenomenon that is not currently taken into account. In addition, it is expected that extremely close-in exoplanets will be tidal-locked to their host star, resulting in axially symmetric temperature gradients. Rather than considering the temperature gradient to be modeled by a dayside and nightside of the exoplanet, I will be modeling it as coming from N concentric zones. Inclusion of these refinements to current planetary photometric emission models will allow for better determination of the albedo and the temperature gradient of exoplanets.
