I rebuild recycled computers, which are given to nonprofits and Freegeek volunteers. Free Geek recycles computers and other electronic components. It donates computers to community nonprofit organizations.

I helped maintain the steam tug Portland, doing such jobs as painting and cleaning.

I wrote short articles of interest to the SE Portland community. For examples, I wrote stories about neighborhood stores, the local-food movement, and cell-phone radiation.

I copy-edited a 200-page report written by the National Research Council's Ocean Studies Board.

I did whatever needed to be done one morning a week, including research, writing, and editing.I did a research project to find out if the amount of mercury in compact fluorescent lamps is large enough to be a hazard. My conclusion was that CFLs save so much energy that the trivial amount of mercury released is inconsequential. Their use reduces mercury emissions when they are used by customers of coal-generated electricity. No mercury is released as long as you always recycle your old CFLs.

I did editing, rewriting, and copy-editing on a volunteer, as-needed basis.The first project I did was to rewrite a case study of a project in Mexico that had been poorly translated from Spanish. Another volunteer had translated it, but it turned out that that person did not write well in English. I rewrote the translation so that the meaning was clear and as close as possible to the meaning of the original. I had the Spanish original available. Despite my not being fluent in Spanish, with the help of Spanish-English dictionaries, I was able to come closer to the document's original meaning.My most recent project was to copy-edit a 90-page grazing plan for a Conservancy property in Eastern Oregon.

CTS translated election documents into six languages for several California jurisdictions. I inspected computer-translated documents for obvious character-set and formatting errors and corrected or flagged them before forwarding them to language experts for completion.
