The Chicago Recycling Coalition champions environmentally and fiscally sound management of solid waste through research, education, and advocacy, emphasizing waste reduction, reuse, recycling, composting, and buying recycled.We also work to serve the community in an educational and advisory capacity. As local and county governments wrestle with ever more waste and rising disposal costs, we are frequently asked to share our expertise on issues ranging from institutional recycling programs to the purchase of recycled products. For the media, we are regularly contacted as a reliable source of recycling history, political insights, and hard facts.

Carter O’Brien is the Field Museum’s Sustainability Officer and works in the Keller Science Action CenterChair of the Museum’s green team (A Greener Field), he works to institutionalize sustainability principles in areas such as recycling, food operations, alternative transportation, green infrastructure, community gardening and renewable energy.In 2008 he received Fair Trade Chicago’s first-ever Changemaker of the Year award, which recognized his efforts to make the Museum’s Corner Bakery restaurant the only one in America that served only Fair Trade and Rainforest Alliance certified coffee.A 48 year old Chicago native, he is also the Vice President of the Chicago Recycling Coalition, a Treekeeper, and an avid cyclist, musician and martial artist.

The Environment and Climate Network (formerly PIC Green Museum Network) is a collaborative and pro-active community working to establish museums as leaders in environmental stewardship and sustainability, and climate action.During the 2018 Annual Meeting and MuseumExpo, the Network was renamed from “PIC Green Museum Network” to Environment and Climate Network. In the last ten years since the Network’s official founding, accomplishments include establishing the annual Sustainability Excellence Awards (SEA) to educate, facilitate, and encourage green practices in museums, hosting multiple sustainability summits, workshops, and sessions, and connecting colleagues across the world in a collaborative conversation of why environmental sustainability and museums should not be mutually exclusive.We believe that a museum’s role in the community includes being a resource for information and building awareness of issues that impact our world today. The Environment and Climate Network’s focus is to explore and articulate environmentally sustainable practices and taking climate action as fundamental to all museum missions.
