Rig Performance Technology Automation Group – Aftermarket. We were responsible for continuing support of legacy drilling rigs control systems. Job duties included bug fixes, enhancements, and full system upgrades. A legacy fleet of legacy equipment all in operations during an oil field glut is tricky to support. Cost were a major factor in all decision making both from the client as well as Cameron. Interfaced with other Cameron groups to help support total rig package builds and support. Besides the Legacy support, we also assisted with ongoing support of the ROF or Rig of the Future that Cameron produced and sold. The ROF was taking the high level of automation and applying it to a land rig so that you had the safety and reliability that offshore rigs enjoy. Zone Management, Alarm conditions, and other tool safety systems that typically did not exist on land rigs were introduced and well received by our customers.

Taking all the data that generated from the fleet and getting it to shore is a huge challenge. We have 13 vessels bringing data to shore at the moment. Once the data is onshore, we implement a variety of AI to analyze and interpret this data for patterns and or anomalies. Understanding the data and its validity to recognize what it is trying to tell us is the way forward for condition based monitoring. As the administrator of the Project, my role is to clearly define what data we need and maintain its validity from field sensor to onshore data base record. We currently face two major challenges I this endeavor. First and foremost, data quality. By this, I mean dealing with the inconsistent data quality standards that our vendors produce. The second challenge is being able to mind the gap. This pertains to physical gaps in the data stream due to communication latencies. We have several methods that we employ to handle these issues as well as others that we find along the way. Big data is the future and this is just the start.

Gulf Of Mexico - North America

Electronic Technician Thunder Horse Platform (BP owned - ENSCO Managed Rig) As an Electronic Technician, my job duties are to ensure the operational integrity of automated systems utilized in Tool Control. My area of responsibility includes the Drill Floor Tools (MAIN and AUX side), the Bulk Mud System used for Pit Management/Mud Pump Operations, assist SubSea engineers with support and repair of the BOP, Diverter, HPU, and their Automated Control System(s). Additionally, we are tasked with support of the Rigs internal CCTV System used for operations. Maintaining a high level of safety is paramount so we were constantly working with and around operations to ensure process and personnel safety.

As Supervisor, I was responsible for the 25 employees. This was a front line supervisory position that kept me on the front lines technically as well as foot in the door of management. It was my duty to ensure that all personnel had what they needed to do their job. To ensure that they had the qualifications to perform the job for which they were tasked. Provide positive and constructive feedback on the jobs performed to instill confidence and institutional awareness while out on a Rig or jobsite. Facilitate personnel and equipment logistics to and from job site/Rig. Act as a single point of contact for the customer from start to finish. Responsible for the decisions that the employees under me render while out on the jobsite. Our projects ranged from simple code changes and updates to full Rig Drilling Control System packages. Taking a system footprint and migrating it forward 10 years to modern technology is almost never plug and play. Proper vetting of equipment, a thorough site survey, and efficient use of time are the keys to making such endeavors surprise free when you take it to the customers site for integration and commissioning.

Shortly after being hired on with Englobal, I was assigned to a customer in the ship channel. The customer had a tank farm for loading and unloading product to a barge. They did not have an onsite support personnel for the control system so Englobal was hired to fill this role. I supported the plants control system while engaging the customer on the possibility of upgrading the system to current supportable levels by the various vendors of the controls. After a year, the system was upgraded to the latest hardware and software available with zero nonscheduled downtime.

Wonderware West (formerly Standard Automation and Controls) is a distributor of Invensys Wonderware products used widely in the SCADA/Industrial Controls industry. I started out in Technical Support answering phones for about 16 states for all Wonderware Products. I eventually worked my way into Field Service traveling to customer sites to assist with problems, create new features, survey the existing system for upgrades, and generally do what the customer wanted as long as it was legal and safe. After 5 wonderful eye opening years, i decided to move on and try some thing different.
