Senior Biomedical Engineering Capstone R&D Project

Project Objective - Design, build, and test a novel, cost effective, easily reproducible, medical simulation device to enhance physician training on ultrasound examination of the human eye globe.Stakeholder - Lenard Lamsen M.D., Emergency Medicine Physician, and Director of The Center of Advanced Medical Simulation University of TN Medical CenterOverview - Myself and 3 other students worked as a team for 9 months to complete the full engineering life cycle and achieve the stated objective. As a team we successfully planned, communicated, executed, and delivered a device that exceeded the stakeholders expectations. In addition to collaborative tasks, I served as the team's Technology Officer. I was responsible for 3D modeling of components, writing validation test requirements based on stakeholder needs, drafting the manufacturing process, and reviewing deliverables. We created 5 unique ballistic gel eye models representing 4 different eye pathologies commonly seen in the emergency setting and 1 healthy eye as a comparison model. We created a facial model that securely held the eye globe in place to facilitate ultrasound examination. We delivered detailed production documentation to facilitate ease of replication by future users. Our completed model was enthusiastically approved by the stakeholder and will be used at the Center of Advanced Medical Simulation at UT Medical Center.
