Senior Biomedical Engineering Capstone R&D Project
Project Objective - Design, build, and test a novel, cost effective, easily reproducible, medical simulation device to enhance physician training on ultrasound examination of the human eye globe.Stakeholder - Lenard Lamsen M.D., Emergency Medicine Physician, and Director of The Center of Advanced Medical Simulation University of TN Medical CenterOverview - Myself and 3 other students worked as a team for 9 months to complete the full engineering life cycle and achieve the stated objective. As a team we successfully planned, communicated, executed, and delivered a device that exceeded the stakeholders expectations. In addition to collaborative tasks, I served as the team's Technology Officer. I was responsible for 3D modeling of components, writing validation test requirements based on stakeholder needs, drafting the manufacturing process, and reviewing deliverables. We created 5 unique ballistic gel eye models representing 4 different eye pathologies commonly seen in the emergency setting and 1 healthy eye as a comparison model. We created a facial model that securely held the eye globe in place to facilitate ultrasound examination. We delivered detailed production documentation to facilitate ease of replication by future users. Our completed model was enthusiastically approved by the stakeholder and will be used at the Center of Advanced Medical Simulation at UT Medical Center.
Biomedical Engineering Student Project Highlights
-Completed numerous, group and individual, novel biomedical research proposals. Proposed products included an improved implantable electrode, improved biomaterial for use in hip implants, and an improved bone graph material to accelerate bone growth. -Built and programmed a digital theremin with a custom circuit using arduino.-Designed multiple physics based solvers in Excel and Matlab to determine an optimized solution for a multivariable system. -Programed a roomba to autonomously navigate an unknown space and complete specific tasks. Programming included image recognition, distance tracking, and manual override capability. -Presentation on Advanced Signal Processing Techniques with a focus on machine learning for real time processing of EEG signals. Described how machine learning algorithms can convert EEG signals into control signals for mechanical devices such as robotic prosthetics.
Software Qa Intern
As a member of the QA team, I was assigned to test new software applications for mobile and web functionality. Using the JavaScript Mocha test framework, I created a comprehensive suite of automated tests to quickly and accurately identify backend errors. Using test rail, I wrote and executed validation tests to ensure the quality of the front end user experience. Independently, I was assigned to evaluate new hardware devices for compatibility with existing software applications. This internship was a valuable learning experience, as I had significant exposure to the software development process and the opportunity to improve my JavaScript coding skills.
Seasonal Management Staff
After two seasons as a Pool Manager, I was promoted to Regional Supervisor and ultimately assigned the companies highest revenue division. In that role I was responsible for managing all aspects of multiple commercial pools in a three-county region. I trained, scheduled, and supervised a staff of 75 pool managers and lifeguards. I ensured outstanding facility maintenance, patron safety, and customer relations with over 13 individual client organizations. I ensured compliance with county health regulations. The role frequently required skills in conflict resolution, time management, human resource management, and mechanical maintenance. Responsible for a company car and visiting facility / client sites daily.
Intern
Assigned to independently assess and improve the performance of 3D printed components for confidential defense client product. Created and executed methodology for standardized performance validation testing of components, and conducted basic finite element analysis. Redesigned components, based upon analysis, to improve functionality, performance, and strength. Tested new designs to ensure improved performance. Formally presented the full life cycle of the project to company management. Redesigned components were approved and implemented by management.
Intern
I was assigned to assess and improve the performance of cable connections on industrial computer interface hardware. Client feedback indicated that the vibration from equipment operation caused cable connections to frequently fail. A solution was required that did not interfere with the ease of use of cable connection. I designed a component that was approved by the company and incorporated into manufacturing.
