First and foremost I am a storyteller. Over the last two decades I have used a variety of media to tell stories on everything from the Exxon Valdez oil spill to how a hiker, lost in the wild, managed to survive for almost two weeks in a hollowed out tree, to how businesses use state-of-the-art technology to improve their productivity and profitability. In addition to my writing and communications work, I also write fiction and non-fiction books. Wolves (a 2013 thriller set on Minnesota's Iron Range) features Sam Rivers, a wildlife biologist and special agent for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Sam's penchant for understanding predators (wild animals and human) helps him uncover a crime unlike any he's seen before. Wolves was selected a Finalist for a Minnesota Book Award in Feb. 2014, and was the winner of a Midwest Book Award in May, 2014. Savage Minnesota, my second Sam Rivers novel, was serialized by the Star Tribune of the Twin Cities during the Summer of 2014. It appeared in 100 installments from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and is currently available in ebook form ($3.99) on Amazon, B&N.com and wherever ebooks are sold. My third Sam Rivers novel is nearing completion; I expect to find an agent/publisher in early 2018. My first non-fiction book Lost in the Wild (2006) conveys the story of two different hikers, each of whom became lost in the woods. It has received numerous accolades and continues to enjoy excellent sales success. My second non-fiction book, Opening Goliath (2010), tells the story of the discovery, exploration and politics surrounding a southeastern Minnesota cave complex. Opening Goliath was the recipient of a Minnesota Book Award. My third non-fiction book, Gunflint Burning: Fire in the Boundary Waters (University of Minnesota Press), will be released in May, 2018.
