Our deep experience in general contracting and engineering in numerous industries ensures all phases of capital project management, from planning through post-construction, are executed on time and budget. The project is the world’s first Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) plant using rice straw as the feed stock. We are extremely grateful to have received several awards from Engineering New Record for the 2021 year: Best Global Project Honors in the Manufacturing Category, Best Regional USA Project in the Northern California / Hawaii Region, and a Safety Award of Merit for having completed 1,090,000 safe work hours with a lost time rate of zero.This type of project is the reason I chose engineering for a career, and I am fortunate to play a role in bringing this project to market. HG serviced the industry's biggest and best clients. While each client may have had their own capital management programs, they utilized our procedures to deliver a complete and total project, with high quality and client service.My role included overall responsibility for the methods and procedures associated with project execution. I coordinated with business/discipline managers for staff planning/balancing, staff management/development, and performance appraisal. I served as the Civil Structural Discipline Manager for my business unit. I also lead the Discipline Managers to meet the business and technical goals of the business. I delegated considerable responsibility to the design staff to meet quality and production goals. I provided training and project assignments in order to elevate the skill of both my individual staff and the collective team. Responsible for sustaining profitable reimbursable staff levels, while sustaining the quality of the work products and effectiveness of the production methods. Select participation in high impact or high consequence proposal preparation; including win strategy, hot button discovery, and methods to address / offset issues.Worked with Project Managers to develop growth assignments for the design staff, and in turn developed the staff the meet those challenges. The training, mentorship, and organizational skills I received from my Harris supervisors became critical to project success. I maintained a strong design and discipline presence on each project. Clients favor this. A few select projects of which I am particularly proud:New Market Development: Assisted Harris Group with the pursuit of new markets to diversify their client portfolio. Clients included major aerospace, microelectronic, facility, and primary metals clients. This improved my business development acumen and business management delivery skills.Boeing: Executed large and small capital projects, including Transonic Wind Tunnel, Energy Centers, manufacturing facilities, process and material handling upgrades, scrubbing system, paint facilities, and CNC machine foundations.Pulp Mill Modernization; Longview Washington: Lead Civil and Structural Engineer, and Site Project Engineer. Site wide upgrade of existing mill site, including process, power and recovery boiler upgrades, lime kiln upgrades, and a wood chip outstocking and receiving upgrade. Six year project, largest capital project for its duration in the Pacific Northwest.Oriented Strand Board Plant; Sutton, West Virginia: Lead Civil and Structural Engineer, and Site Wide Project Engineer. Greenfield project, one of the world’s largest OSB facilities, incorporating new technology and process efficiencies. Project Engineer duties included oversight of numerous sub-consultants. Spent a year on-site assisting with project start up, construction contract oversight, and close out.Pulp and Paper: Executed numerous large and small capital projects within the Pacific NW’s leading pulp and paper clients. Projects includes wood chip receiving, retrieval, and screening; process upgrades, power and recovery boilers, pulp mills, paper machine upgrades, and site service upgrades.

Civil Structural EngineerRust International Apr 1979 - Feb 1987I was fortunate to have worked with Rust International, at the time one of the world’s largest engineering and construction firms. I designed industrial structures, principally in the Pulp and Paper industry. Designs also included steel making, chemical manufacturing, coal and material handling, chemical processing, and aerospace / defense. My project list includes new paper machines, several paper machine rebuilds, pulp mill additions, design of the world’s larges coal handling facility, rocket motor casting, select microelectronic manufacturing, and many others. The projects were capital intensive, with critical time to market aspects. I am grateful for the training and mentorship I received from my supervisors and my peers. The lessons I learned prepared me well to advance my career in the execution of capital projects, and provided a strong base for my career in general.
