In Nov. 2014, Mrs. Smith partnered as Co-Founder with Founder Angela in the launch of Valerie’s House Inc., located in Historic Dean Park. She is Co-founder, Founding Board Member, and past Vice President of the Board of Directors. Smith’s vast experience from business planning to marketing, networking, and community involvement provided the skill set to assist and advise in the operations and growth of Valerie’s House. Valerie’s House Inc. is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization devoted to providing children, ages 3 to 17, and their caregivers who have experienced the death of a loved one, a safe place in which to share and experience loving support while moving through the grieving and healing process. Smith helped lead Valerie’s House through the crowd-funding fundraising campaign, wrote the organization’s Business Plan including developed five-year financials, negotiated its first major gift of a two-year rent free lease in historic Dean Park, and others, implemented and manages a social media presence to gain community support, and continues to volunteer her management expertise, advice, and support to Melvin and the staff. The non-profit successfully opened on January 11, 2016 to serve its first set of families, and has quickly expanded to create more groups due to the overwhelming response in community need. They have plans to launch in the Naples, Florida, and Cape Coral, Florida markets in August 2016.

From 2007 to 2014, Mrs. Smith was the CEO/Owner and Marketing Director of two franchises for the popular burger chain, Foster’s Grille, establishing two units for the company in Cape Coral and Fort Myers. Together with her husband, the two brought the concept to Southwest Florida and quickly established them as the leading profit units in the company, with combined earnings of two million a year in sales. The Cape Coral location has been and continues to be the number one unit in the chain and Fort Myers holds as a top performer. As a family-friendly neighborhood grille, the concept was voted Best Burger every year and continues to serve the community under new ownership. Of related interest: Ms. Smith created the Brand Guidelines for Foster’s Franchise Concepts, the Northern-Virginia hamburger chain (Foster’s Grille), and supported Franchisee advertising, marketing, and social media efforts until 2014.

At CommTek, I held increasingly senior positions from art director, creative director, and ultimately to associate publisher, provided a new perspective on the business of publishing.
