Delivering the ‘investment activity’ of the Welsh Government co-funded environment grants (including Green Recovery, Local Places for Nature, and Community Woodlands schemes).Responsibilities included:Assessment of a wide range of applications in accordance with application guidance, policy and procedures to make robust and balanced recommendations for decision makersManaging a range of post award projects, including monitoring delivery against approved purposes, reviewing risk, and identifying and helping to resolve challenges that arise during project delivery.Providing support and guidance to potential applicants.Liaising with and reporting to external partners and advisors to the environment funds (including Welsh Government colleagues, environment partners (Local Nature Partnership representatives) and Heritage Fund Committee members). Understanding their motivations and policy drivers was critical to informing case papers and project reporting.

Lincolnshire And Transylvania

Coordinating the Operations for the set up of a new project in Transylvania and then managing a successful 8 week season of data collection in summer 2013.A nomadic team of ca 110 volunteers and 15 staff, working through 9 villages in the Tarnava Mare (Natura 2000) over a period of 8 weeks. A stunning, traditional landscape, we collected data in HNV grasslands on indicator flora species, small mammals, herpetofauna, large mammals, bats and birds through a wide variety of survey method.Responsibilities included; contracting scientific staff, developing projects and educational materials, managing budgets, writing risk assessments, liaising with research partners Fundatia ADEPT (a Romanian NGO), overall management and coordination of field season (volunteers, data collection, training of staff, coordinating movements between villages, monitoring and auditing safety measures and providing H&S training to all involved). Project management required me to balance the needs of our volunteers with that of the programme and research partners to deliver survey agreed outputs. The data will form a baseline against which future years will be able to monitor the biodiversity in relation to changes in land use and it is then hoped that Operation Wallacea and Fundatia Adept will be able to persuade changes in European agri-environment schemes in order to suit these low impact, biodiversity rich farm systems which have this far nurtured the beautiful, wildlife rich region.

Operation Wallacea relies upon recruitment of thousands of volunteers to provide the manpower for its large scale survey efforts across each of its projects. Because volunteers cover their costs of being on site, this also means that Operation Wallacea can stay outside of usual funding pressures and determine its own research focus. However, this does also mean that volunteers usually have high costs associated with getting to and staying on site and so fundraising support is offered in order to cover these costs. Responsibilities included: Presenting to groups of students, at schools, colleges and universities across the UK, and coaching through the various methods of fundraising (traditional, events-based and grants and sponsorship); ongoing support throughout the lead up to an expedition in order to make sure that their fundraising is most successful through advising onevents and editing letters to produce high quality applications.

Managing the Operations for a project at Opwall means balancing the needs of our volunteers with the agreed outcomes with our project partners. In Peru, we work with AmazonEco, an established research organisation to join a long-term monitoring project in the Pacaya Samiria reserve. Responsibilities include managing budgets, coordination of over 200 volunteers and staff, organising internal transfers and accommodation, health and safety training and auditing.
