Job entailed: Instructing and managing 5th graders from charter and Poudre Valley school district for three days and two nights in an untraditional work week for a stipend. Primary responsibilities entailed planning curriculum and teaching 2-hour block classes on fire ecology, mountain pine beetle, Meteorology, geology, forest ecology, and wildlife to classes of 15-25 with a large component in the field. Leading educational day hikes (6-8 hours) for groups of 15-20. Leading 2-hour campfire sessions to groups of 30-40 with a partner focusing on fun, and reflection, of day's activities. All activities required a large component of the “Leave No Trace” principles in ways that were fun and engaging for 9-11 year olds. When not teaching instructors were required to occupy students with adventure games and activities as well as assist with dining hall responsibilities such as cleaning and supervision of ravenous students. The ability to multitask and improvise from a plan was crucial for this position. 2015 and 2018 seasons completed.

Job entailed: Primary responsibilities include Stabilization and transport of injured guests on a daily and sometimes hourly basis. Stabilization of patients required a working understanding of emergency first aid and the ability to make decisions in stressful and sometimes dangerous situations. Transport of patients most often involved handling of a toboggan in sometimes difficult terrain with variable conditions. During days of heavy snow avalanche mitigation and control was performed requiring the handling of explosives and navigation of dangerous terrane with a partner as well as an in-depth understanding of avalanche hazard and rescue. When not responding to injured guests I was expected to perform general upkeep and enforcement of mountain safety in addition to constant customer service and public outreach.

Job entailed: Planning and executing 5 day adventures with between 5 and 10 clients and 2 support guides. Adventures vary weekly over a variety of disciplines from canyoneering, backpacking, climbing, mountain biking, and fishing. Clients vary from a variety of backgrounds related to recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism. As a senior guide, I was required to teach and mentor stress management and healthy communication principles as well as maintain the emotional and physical safety of all clients at all times. Additionally, Senior guides are required to be the first responder to any medical emergency in the field as well as manage high risk and potentially life-threatening situations whenever they arise.
