I began my career as a Civil Engineer in the field of transportation engineering with Kittelson & Associates, Inc. My focus through the first decade of professional life was helping to move people efficiently and safely through intersections and around cities. After working and living in Baltimore, Madison, Boise, Bend, and (briefly) Brisbane, I wanted to focus more of my time in the helping move people to/from a brand-new 4-year university in Bend, Oregon. Around that time I found that I enjoyed making kombucha and it was a creative outlet to complement the analytical side of my career. I had always wanted to start a business, but didn't know what to sell until my friends encouraged me to sell kombucha. What began in my kitchen soon stretched into a commercial kitchen and is now enjoyed around Oregon and SW Washington as Compassion Kombucha. I kept my day job at OSU-Cascades to support my growing family (now 4 kids, a dog, 2 cats, 3 sheep, and a camel - although we don't own him, he just lives with us). We have a great team at Compassion Kombucha that keep the fermentation going and I help out on weekends and mornings/evenings. When I am not developing a new kombucha flavor or managing parking and transportation services at OSU-Cascades, I am applying what I've learned in parking and transportation to help others implement smart parking technology through my consulting business, Proof Parking, LLC. My first project is to support a local mixed-use development that is in a very busy area of Bend. I am helping them to implement a parking management system that will accommodate a variety of users (employees, retail customers, and residents). We know people are going to park here for adjacent businesses and will be implementing strategies to prioritize parking for customers and residents.

Then, when we began brewing our own kombucha—first for our own family, then for friends, and then for loyal customers all over town—we saw the ripple effect of a good idea. Research AssistantUniversity Of Wisconsin-Madison Jan 2006 - Oct 2007Casey completed his master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, which included thesis research conducted under NCHRP Project 20-7: Evaluation of the Flashing Yellow Arrow Permissive Left-Turn Indication Field Implementation. He was responsible for coordinating with multiple public agencies to obtain data at over 160 sites in the US where the Flashing Yellow Arrow (FYA) indication has been implemented. Casey conducted a before-and-after evaluation of the crash data using multiple statistical methods. His research provided support for including the FYA display in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
