About Casey Carlson

I have been in the rail industry in some form or another since I was 10 years old, and come from a family of railroaders that stretches back to the 1890's. Having held positions ranging from mechanic to vice president and board director, with various positions in between, my experience has been well-rounded. As a customer training instructor in the locomotive industry, I am driven to provide documentation and training that contributes to the long-term success of a locomotive design and to customer satisfaction.     Created Manufacturing Work Instructions (MWI's) to assist in training production personnel in assembly and testing procedures for locomotives ranging from 1960's Dash-2's to state-of-the-art MPXpress commuter locomotives and multi-engine switchers. Also assisted in creating scheduling workflows by creating Task By Day sheets, which organized the tasks various craft workers needed to complete for each days work. Assisted in finding change-orders and potential problems on rebuild contracts to maximize efficiency. Suggestions were made on tooling and work improvements to speed processes. This work, along with the Task By Days, is outside of the documention leads normal scope of work, but is greatly respected for its high quality and the assistance it gives.

    Repaired and operated steam locomotives built between 1915 and 1920. This required general machining, welding/fabrication and mechanical work. As a hostler, was responsible for safely preparing the steam locomotives for operation, one of the most critical tasks in steam locomotive operations, as the proper warming of the boiler adds greatly to the longevity of the locomotive and reduces maintenance needs. Lubrication and inspection of all running gear and associated parts guaranteed safe operation.In repairing diesels, was a member of the group that rebuilt one-of-a-kind six-axle narrow gauge Porter locomotive built in 1947 for the Colorado Historical Society. Also worked on GP-7's and GP40's as contract labor for an area shortline.
