Experience has shown me the importance of working with professionals who value the strengths of an individual. I understand how a strong leader and well-constructed program can improve students’ overall achievement and teacher effectiveness. My teaching background, passionate school improvement involvement, activities outside of the classroom, and commitment to helping others reach their goals have prepared me well for this responsibility. The nature of my specialty has fostered traits vital to the success of an administrative position. As an art teacher in a rural district you are often asked to be resourceful and versatile. Adapting without sacrificing rigor has afforded me the opportunity to implement research based strategies to improve academic achievement in disadvantaged students. My numerous teaching assignments across grade levels and departments has allowed me to hone my interpersonal skills. I am successful within the complexity of this role because of my strong critical thinking skills. My work on the School Improvement Team at Tahquamenon Area Schools equipped me with the understanding to identify barriers, organize long term plans, and evaluate processes. I have continued those methods at Manistique Area Schools in my position as Reading Interventionist and shared them in my role as Mentor Teacher. These experiences have taught me how to maintain successful relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders. As a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians' Pow Wow and Food Sovereignty Committees, I’ve deepened my commitment to community involvement. I contributed to shaping policies that defined the Food Sovereignty Committee's mission and vision, and helped organize and execute the feast meal for our annual Niiwin Noodin Pow Wow.Education, inquiry, and involvement have gifted me with the tools necessary to be an organized, professional, and accountable leader for my peers.
