Research Assistant in the Duerr Laboratory The lab studies Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) a small transparent nematode that grows up to approximately 1 mm in length. The C. elegans often serves as a model organism to study development and behavior. In the Duerr lab, I often conduct behavior assays, PCR, gel electrophoresis, prepare solutions, protein gel electrophoresis, and observations of how monoamines affect the organism. The lab contains an abundance of differing strains of C. elegans for us to research. A main focus is studying neuroscience on these organisms that contain 302 identified neurons and 959 somatic cells in an adult hermaphrodite. The large ratio of nervous cells to somatic cells allow a great observation on how monoamines affect the organism. The lab also studies how mutations in multiple genes targeting monoamines affect transport, synthesis, reception, and degradation. Understanding these monoamines is vital to learning and understanding more about the human nervous system. We also use medicine on our organisms with these mutations when doing behavior assays. This medicine is often used in diseases in humans that involve monoamines, such as Parkinson's disease.
