I am an adult TCK (Third Culture Kid), culturally invisible to those who do not know me. My experience has taught me a lot about crossing cultures, and although I have much more to learn, I have learned this fundamental truth. I administered all billing statements related to the rental property of 12 rotating Japanese astrophysicists from Tokyo University conducting research on Mauna Kea in Hilo, Hawaii. I resided with the scientists in exchange for free school lodging equating to approximately $600.00 per month. I supported the scientists in performing other business matters such as shopping, making appointments and scheduling meetings. I often translated and interpreted English to Japanese and Japanese to English with regard to needed information, documentation and general correspondence related to tenancy. This position demanded that I adhere to a high level of confidentiality.
