Casey Box will join the organization as Director of Global Strategy on October 18, 2021. Casey brings considerable experience leading philanthropic causes to preserve and advance the rights of Indigenous Peoples around the world. For eight years, Casey served as the Executive Director for Land is Life, where he built an inspiring and enduring legacy focused on the advancement of Indigenous Peoples’ rights. He has worked to address issues, including the security of Indigenous peoples and their lands and territories; free, prior and informed consent; and protecting peoples living in voluntary isolation and initial contact. In this new role with The Christensen Fund, Casey will focus on supporting international organizations, leaders and movements in recognizing the inherent rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Greater New York City Area

Key Accomplishments:- Managed and expanded a portfolio of grantees across our global network of grassroots Indigenous organizations designed to support their self-determination on a rolling basis.- Facilitated the design and launch of Indigenous-Led Grantmaking funds that are coordinated by Indigenous leaders who manage to provide direct support to the most overlooked Indigenous communities. This fund allows Indigenous Regional Coordinators to deploy small, flexible funds to address ever-changing needs at the grassroots. To date this initiative has supported over 250 grassroots initiatives across dozens of countries.- Manage a growing portfolio of long-term support partnerships with grassroots Indigenous organizations based on the self determination of the communities they serve.- Maintain ongoing, transparent communications with grassroots partners to identify challenges and opportunities and co-develop activities and initiatives that achieve our shared mission.- Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization to funding partners, NGO allies, international agencies, our Board of Directors and at global forums and conferences.- Identify and facilitate new program strategies with our global team that utilize Land is Life’s strengths as a team and network on an ongoing basis.- Provide insights and feedback to funding partners on ways of improving their approach to grassroots support through more participatory grantmaking.- Create linkages across Land is Life’s global network of formal and informal grassroots partners to exchange knowledge, resources and experiences.- Elevate our grassroots partners mission and messaging to bring greater awareness of their urgent environmental human rights challenges and impact.- Expanded a team of two to a global team of 22 across six countries, half of whom are Indigenous leaders.- In 2020, led the process to expand Land is Life’s Board of Directors through the addition of three Indigenous leaders.

Sri Lanka

Key Accomplishments:Conducted organization’s first-ever pro-poor value chain analysis of four food security initiatives, which led to receiving its first USAID grant; co-wrote a complementary toolkit, which included analysis of organization’s grantmaking and recommendations on how to better leverage achieve collective impact with grantees.

Greater New York City Area

Retained for one-month assignment to facilitate demonstration event at United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues seeking halt of Belo Monte Dam construction in Brazil. Coordinated major public awareness event with Academy Award-winning film director and producer James Cameron and actress Sigourney Weaver.

Member of a 5-person team to teach Model United Nations for the Global Classrooms program to high school students in New York City Public Schools on sustainable development, human rights and peacekeeping. Also implemented similar program in Israel and Palestinian Territories, teaching curriculum to students.
