For over a decade I have mentored students navigating the dual roles of a varsity athlete and the intellectually expansive life of a college student. Given the incessant demands of their sport, it is difficult to fulfill both roles well. Indeed, it requires enormous desire and discipline for an athlete to break out of the stereotypical image often assigned to “jocks.” After more than ten years advising dozens of Harvard undergraduates, Casey Dornbach stands out for his intense desire to succeed. He applies the same principles of teamwork, character, dedication, and an off-the-chart work ethic to both his sport and studies, and he does so with a joyful curiosity and willingness to persevere that is infectious.
