• Technical supervision of strain development for a major collaboration between Evonik and DSM (https://www.veramaris.com/home.html) to develop a sustainable process for manufacture of omega-3 fats for aquaculture feeds, thereby reducing pressure on ocean fisheries and improving human health.• Invented and transferred the IP assets of a faster, cheaper, and better, cell-based platform for manufacture of influenza vaccines from DSM to Sanofi Pasteur. • Managed the screening of several thousand organisms and extracts thereof for bioactivities useful for crop protection as part of a collaboration between DSM and Syngenta (https://www.dsm.com/corporate/media/informationcenter-news/2015/11/32-15-dsm-and-syngenta-to-develop-and-commercialize-biological-solutions-for-agriculture.html)

• Senior Scientist/Project Lead: Managed an 18-month, joint research agreement with a multinational corporate partner to create a cell-based strain development and manufacturing process for two veterinary vaccines. Coordinated pre-clinical animal studies with transgenic influenza vaccines which demonstrated efficacy, justifying commercialization. • Senior Scientist/Technical Lead: Adapted a proprietary algal transformation system for use in expression of therapeutic proteins. Developed techniques for protein secretion, targeted homologous recombination, knockouts, and auxotrophic selection for this novel expression system.

• Program Management: Managed the research and development of improved algal strains for commercial production of triglyceride oils by fermentation. Designed a process for mutagenesis and flow-cytometric selection of desirable traits.• Lead Scientist: Investigated the mechanism and elements involved in the synthesis of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Designed, constructed, and tested several complex recombinant fusion protein expression vectors for proof of concept in a model yeast to test the feasibility of further commercial development.• Product Development: Developed new recombinant protein products commercialized by Fluorescent Diagnostics and NMR reagents business units. Product launches contributed to 10% of total revenue and in other instances had substantially cut production costs. Trained more than 20 employees in recombinant protein expression systems and other biochemical and molecular biological techniques. • Bioinformatics Development: Coordinated the complete genome sequencing of a 35 Mbp algal genome, and established a stand-alone, internal Linux server for data mining and analysis of resulting proprietary gene databases. Mined commercially relevant genes from other mass sequence data using public and custom software. Characterized novel genes and pathways critical to process and strain improvement efforts.

• Staff Scientist: Investigated various aspects of eukaryotic metabolism, protein targeting and genetic transformation, ultimately leading to the metabolic engineering of organisms with designer pathways for biosynthesis of commercially valuable biochemicals and improved biomass accumulation. • Radiation Officer: Ensured compliance with government regulations for the control of ionizing radiation as corporate radiation officer.
