About Jesse Casman

I am a software marketing executive with extensive experience in early-stage startups in Silicon Valley and Japan. I focus on building developer communities. Developer Relations is a key component to reaching customers and building awareness. I work with great companies like IBM, RICOH, and Renesas to leverage open source, open communities and open APIs to build strong developer communities that benefit community members and companies alike. #DevRel doesn’t just happen, it requires planning, effort and insight. I have more than 15 years experience developing smart, high impact marketing and developer relations campaigns. I have been deeply involved in open source, networking, software development, enterprise software and high-performance computing (HPC). I act as the face of companies and communities and have a wide range of specialties around communications: marketing strategy, messaging and positioning development, competitive analysis, content development (writing and graphics), developer-focused tech PR, US market entry for non-US companies, Japanese language fluency. I am currently learning JavaScript and also building my first Raspberry Pi project, a media center for my car.

  • Page One Pr
Team Lead / Head Of Japan Project
    Page One Pr 2006 - 2009
    San Francisco Bay Area
I worked with Page One PR as a full-time employee for three years, focusing on software clients in open source, security, Web 2.0, and other cutting edge technologies. I represented great clients like The Linux Foundation, SourceForge, SugarCRM, RICOH, and many more. I helped my clients manage and coordinate communications with a wide range of technology outlets like The New York Times, CNET, TechCrunch, ReadWriteWeb, Mashable, Wired, SD Times, InfoWorld, ZDNet, The Register. This is where I learned the importance of PR when it’s done right. Correctly describing why your client matters. I was deeply involved -- both strategically and tactically -- with social media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, blogs) and ghostwrote multiple corporate blogs, coordinated Twitter and Facebook accounts for multiple clients, ran a live Tweetup from a Linux tech conference, and multiple other high impact campaigns.
  • Seclarity, Inc.
    Director Of Marketing
    Seclarity, Inc. Mar 2005 - Nov 2005
I had full responsibility for creating the marketing strategy of an early-stage security start-up in an emerging segment of the security market, end-point security. Coordinated with the nascent sales team on development of multiple sales support materials, building lead-gen channels, and gated content as part of website development. Developed initial Marketing Requirements Document (MRD) process for the company. And started initial key business development activities for a company that would live or die by its OEM relationships.
  • Tablus, Inc.
    Director Of Marketing
    Tablus, Inc. Dec 2003 - Dec 2004
I was responsible for creating and staffing marketing department of 2 year old security start-up in emerging security market; development of multiple sales support materials, full trade show calendar, lead generation, website development, marketing campaigns. I implemented and managed the first Marketing Requirements Document (MRD) process for the company, including building competitive analysis, market data, focus groups. I hired and managed a whipsmart marketing group of 3, which included PR, events and lead generation, and product marketing. We successfully redeployed the website on-time and under budget in a company that had several years of internal politica about what was needed. The website went from a major problem to a major lead-gen source for the company, hooked directly into Salesforce.
  • Intrinsic Graphics
Vp Of Marketing And Business Development
    Intrinsic Graphics Sep 2001 - Apr 2003
I joined Intrinsic Graphics, a company that was building a 3D applications development platform. We were aiming high, intending to “dominate interactive entertainment by controlling the deployment platform.” The platform provided a wide range of tools for 3D development (which often meant games) and cross-platform support. It was ahead of its time. Marketing needed to convince users to become experts on our unknown technology and largely give up their expertise on game consoles Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo. It was a hard sell. For business development, I did better by optimizing our human resources. One of the founders was part of my business development team, and by focusing on using his contacts and charisma, we made progress in building a structured partnership program, key to our development platform play. I moved bizdev from getting a “decent grade for tactical, poorer grade for strategic” when I joined, to well-defined lists of technology and marketing partners with a clear timeline of activities and deliverables.
