Using statistics, the actual average production could be inferred. This was used to show management that their targets were unrealistic when compared to the actual output numbers the packlines were achieving. Now knowing the more accurate capacities of our equipment, we could set realistic goals.Our goal was to tip 90 000 bins of apples per annum. We developed a model that predicts the hourly rate of apple-bins that should be tipped relative to the size, weight, packaging methods(do they want apples in bags or in layers stacked on top of each other) , and quality of apples. Over the course of one year, the probability of exceeding our daily targets on any given day increased from 15% to 55%. The daily, combined average output of all three packing lines increased 43% We outperformed our annual target by 22%.
