About Cassander Engelen

I've always had a deep love for nature and the great outdoors. So, when I discovered I could turn that passion into a career focused on protecting it, I jumped at the opportunity. As I gained more experience in the field, I began to realize the incredible value that data science brings to conservation efforts.Over time, I started noticing hidden patterns within vast datasets that hold the key to understanding and preserving the beauty of our world. The more projects I undertook, where I could collect data directly from nature and then analyze and interpret it using various methods, the more I found myself enjoying the process. It's a unique experience that allows me to immerse myself in both the tangible world around us and the unseen world revealed by sophisticated sensors.Looking ahead, both in the near and distant future, I'm committed to continuing my exploration of uncovering these hidden patterns in the natural world. My ultimate goal is to leverage this understanding to directly contribute to the protection and conservation of our environment. Specifically, I'm deeply passionate about working with and safeguarding wildlife, particularly larger mammals. In essence, my journey is driven by a desire to combine my love for nature with the power of data science to make a positive impact on conservation efforts.

Cassander Engelen Work Experience Details
  • Elephants Alive
    Spatial Data Analyist
Elephants Alive Feb 2024 - Present
    South Africa
Project currently submitted for publication: Elephant Crop-Raiding Risk Model Developer and Analyst, I am responsible for progressing the ongoing development and analysis of the elephant crop-raiding risk model. Drawing upon my expertise in data science and statistical analysis, I aim to enhance the model's accuracy and predictive capabilities. Moreover, through techniques such as machine learning and spatial analysis, I aim to provide actionable insights to stakeholders and drive effective mitigation strategies.
  • Elephants Alive
Spatial Data Analyist Human Elephant Conflict
    Elephants Alive Jun 2023 - Feb 2024
    South Africa
During this internship, I applied machine learning methods to develop a human-wildlife conflict (specifically elephant crop-raiding) suitability map that can be used to efficiently direct mitigation strategies to areas at high risk due to a combination of environmental variables. I was also able to gain more experience in performing fieldwork within the APNR (Associated Private Nature Reserves), where I joined fieldwork to survey vulture trees, identify elephants, and conduct elephant collaring operations.
  • Wageningen University & Research
Teachers Assistent For The Course Data Science For Ecology
    Wageningen University & Research Mar 2024 - May 2024
    Wageningen, Gelderland, Netherlands
As a Teaching Assistant, I provide support to students enrolled in the "Data Science for Ecology" course. From facilitating lectures to guiding practical sessions and assisting with projects, I help students understand how to leverage data science methodologies in ecological research. Through this guidance, I help students understand data analysis tools and techniques, empowering them to apply these skills to real-world ecological challenges.
  • Elephants Alive
Spatial Data Analyist Elephant Foraging Ecology
    Elephants Alive Sep 2022 - Mar 2023
    South Africa
During my master's thesis, I focused on the recursion patterns of African Savannah Elephants, specifically their temporal variations in foraging patches. My methodology included calculating time spent in foraging patches and the intervals before revisits. I used Wavelet Coherence analysis to correlate these patterns with yearly rainfall data, exploring potential connections. This research deepened my understanding of elephant ecology and it emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary approaches and data analysis techniques in wildlife research. I'm committed to further contributing to wildlife biology and conservation based on the skills and insights gained from this experience.I was also able to gain more experience in performing fieldwork within the APNR (Associated Private Nature Reserves), where I joined fieldwork to survey vulture trees, identify elephants, and conduct elephant collaring operations.
  • Solvus Inzake Marjorel
    Corona Source And Contact Investigation
Solvus Inzake Marjorel Oct 2020 - Apr 2021
    Netherlands
In this job the task is following up on people by phone that have been tested positive with COVID-19 and informing them about the rules that apply to them. Here it is also important to gather information about how the sickness is developing and who they have been in contact with. This information then has to be administratively in the governmental systems. After that the contacts of the individual need to be informed. During these calls conversation techniques provided by NSPOH are used to make the call be experienced as fluent as possible.
  • Het Spick
    Farm Hand
    Het Spick Jan 2015 - Nov 2020
    Swalmen, Limburg, Netherlands
Handyman and working with cattle (mainly meat cows). Over the years i gained basic level experience in a wide variety of skills ranging from construction to working with animals.
  • Has University Of Applied Sciences
    Researcher Commissioned By Waterschap Limburg
Has University Of Applied Sciences Mar 2020 - Jul 2020
During the last half year of my study at HAS Hogeschool i worked on a project for Waterschap Limburg. This project consisted of finding and trying out technologies that could be used for automating the counting of European Tree-frog males (Hyla arborea). During this project we learned more about Phased array's, Deeplearning (CNN's and RNN's) and SOM mapping.
  • Has University Of Applied Sciences
Researcher Commissioned By Bsnc And The Province Of Noord-Brabant
Has University Of Applied Sciences Sep 2019 - Jan 2020
    Netherlands
This project was a collaboration between HAS University, BSNC (Branchevereniging Sport en Cultuurtechniek ) and the province of Noord-Brabant. During this project we looked at the methodology and to what extend pesticides were used for maintaining natural sports-fields within the province of Noord-Brabant. By contacting all municipalities within the province and asking if the sports clubs where privatised and if the use of pesticides was still allowed within the municipality. Where needed we also contacted privatised clubs directly. Based on this we mapped the pesticide use by sports clubs within the province of Noord-Brabant. This research was done due to the regulations in the "Green Deal sportvelden" state that, starting 2020, the use of pesticides on sports fields will no longer be allowed anymore unless strictly necessary.
  • Lajuma Research Centre South Africa
    Researcher
Lajuma Research Centre South Africa Feb 2019 - Jul 2019
    South Africa
For my third year of Applied Biology, I did two internships. One was in the Netherlands at Radboud University Medical Center Dept of Microbiology. For this internship, I decided to go to South Africa. At Lajuma research center I did research into the latrine usage of the African Civets (Civettictis Civetta) at the Soutpansberg Mountain Range. I did this by setting up camera-traps at known latrine locations, the pictures are taken by the camera traps were collected every two weeks and then labeled corresponding to the animal in the picture. Another big part of my research consisted of finding new latrines, this was done by hiking off-trail and looking for signs of these latrines. My internship consisted mainly of 3 parts:- Literature research- Looking for latrines and setting up camera traps- Processing the data gathered
  • Radboudumc
    Researcher
    Radboudumc 2018 - 2019
    Nijmegen, Gelderland, Netherlands
As a Research Intern, I explored the presence of mycoviruses in Aspergillus fumigatus, employing a diverse range of research methodologies. My responsibilities included conducting extensive literature reviews into our current understanding of fungal virology, performing laboratory experiments including PCR, qPCR, and RNA extractions, and analyzing the data generated in the lab.Key Contributions:Literature Research: I conducted literature reviews to identify key studies and advancements in the field of fungal virology, laying the groundwork for our research objectives and hypotheses.Labwork: I gained hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques, performing PCR and qPCR assays to detect and quantify mycoviral presence in Aspergillus fumigatus isolates.
